Poem: Why Would the Horse Want to Dance With Me?

The girl had a dream

To dance with a horse that was free

The wind blowing through their hair

and grass up to their knees

To dance with a horse

wasn’t about ridding the world of strife

To dance with a horse

seemed to contain all the answers to life

Whenever the wind blew through the young girl’s hair,

she paused

The wind always enticed her to question,

Why would the horse want to dance with me?

And the wind said,

Come. I will show thee.

And the wind disappeared

off over a tree.

Faster and faster it went

over the meadow precociously

Until it hit the forest

rather ferociously

The girl followed it in

To the forest they went

But deep inside,

the wind had not been sent

Where did the wind go

She wanted to know

The wind had gone to the forest as it should

But at the forest the wind was given form and became wood

The horse of the forest

ate from the wood that was a tree

And snorted some of that wind

back out at me

Then the horse galloped off

towards the sea

Carrying with it the wisdom

of the wind and the tree

The breath of the horse

rose up to the sky

And became the air for the birds

to push down on and fly

The trees gave off water

vapor clinging together in clouds

That went flying through the sky,

The wind again free and proud

The wind flew as a cloud

out over the sea

Where the fish swam together

absorbing the wind’s wisdom in the rain that came to be

Then the fish swam up

to the great mountain lake

And the horse drank from the lake

all the water it could take

Carrying with it the wisdom

of the fish and the birds and the trees and the sea

The wind had shown beauty

Eternal connection and harmony

But what of the dance?

How would it come to be?

The wind was inconclusive

And the horse remained elusive

Why would the horse want to dance with me?

The girl, now a woman, still had this mystery

Then the wind, in a moment of quiet profundity

whispered ever so softly

The horse will dance with thee

Sharing the intelligence of all eternity

To feel the weightless fun

Of two hearts in a wave as one

And to experience the grounding of entity

That is the human’s wisdom of chosen identity

The woman’s heart welled

with courage and serenity

And the horse that was free

danced with she

In my quest to understand and create the profound beauty of two beings of different species moving freely together in complete synchronization, I have come to believe there is only one force in the universe: attraction. And the thing that allows the kind of attraction that creates beauty and harmony is identity. It's being completely grounded in who you are. It's your ability to maintain your sense of self in relation to other.

Fear is a loss of identity. It's a loss of your sense of self in relation to other.

Identity is the root of all beauty. A loss of identity - fear - is the root of all harm and ugliness.

Horses naturally want to connect and move in sync with humans. But in order for a horse to do that, it has to be able to find you. You have to maintain your identity.

This is the single greatest challenge for humans, for nearly everything makes us step away from who we truly are. Free will is the capacity to choose to stay grounded, no matter what. Chosen identity.

The horse will dance with thee

Sharing the intelligence of all eternity

To feel the weightless fun

Of two hearts in a wave as one

And to experience the grounding of entity

That is the human’s wisdom of chosen identity
